Keyboarding

  • Recommendation for keyboarding needed
  • Parameters: (1) designate a grade to begin instruction [possibly grades 3 or 4]; (2) rotation of existing keyboarding instructor [based on K-6 configuration, that position is no longer possible]; (3) SK feels school librarians' positions may be in jeopardy [HT's opinion, high school would lose a great resource in losing Cora] [Keystone programs coming, and there has to be a monitoring process in place]
  • NeO2 (rep will give us three to pilot); links to Renaissance Place; supports Study Island
  • After discussion, starting instruction in grade 4; use existing technology rather than purchase new and use existing computer labs
    • If 4th, annual proficiency test to check on level of expertise
    • Can test out of keyboarding, or you are back in with an intervention program (built in, i.e. less time for book selection, and keyboarding intervention)
  • Six days: one day has a 25-minute library and then 25-minute keyboarding
  • If not a replacement, teacher would have to attend and be with librarians (i.e. keyboarding A/B CD E/F)
  • Programs: Type 2 Learn (at I.S.)
  • Final suggestions:
    • Type 2 Learn
    • Good reporting mechanism
    • Grade 4 (Year 1)
      • 20 wpm at 93% proficiency after year 1 (grade 4)--what percent are at this goal, hopefully 80%
      • AB CD EF at end of year
    • Grade 5 (Year 2)
      • Address fall out (those that do not meet the 20 wpm at 93%)
      • Beginning of 5th have performance exam of those from grade 4
      • If need remediation, may occur during recess
    • Based upon existing personnel
    • Keyboarding is "Replacement" and not "Supplemental"
  • Keyboarding Curriculum Example
  • Sample schedule for keyboard at Elementary
